Twenty-five years ago, an unfortunate boy was born—his mother dead by way of him being alive at all. A poor sacrifice and a poor omen of the life to come.The boy, named Kazimir Rose, was held by his father, Theodore, shortly after his mother's death. It was said by Theodore himself that he never wanted Kazimir and the only reason he resided within the Rose family's care was because of the words choked out by the dark silhouette of a tragic woman in the doorway of the infirmary: 'Do not cast away this child—your child. You are selfish and heedless. But you are not cruel. You are not beyond reason.'

Half of this may or may not have been true. Kazimir supposes it depends on who one asks. Nevertheless, the woman that spoke that night was none other than Theodore Rose's wife, Emmeline—his first love, if one could call what they had together that. Kazimir is certain, if only because Theodore insisted it, that if not for Emmeline, he would be an orphan. Perhaps this would have been a crueler fate, or perhaps not. It may, at the very least, have been less complex.Kazimir loved Emmeline like he might've his own blood-mother, and she, likewise, miraculously treated him as her own, despite the trauma of the betrayal of infidelity. While grateful for her acceptance of him—her love for him—he couldn't help but feel responsible for Theodore's vitriol towards her, as well as the abject hatred he bore for Kazimir himself. There was also that twisted tug Kazimir felt on his heart that perhaps Emmeline only loved him because she could not have a son or daughter of her own.

All were feelings far too heavy on a child's heart. Down, down, down, they went.Kazimir's mother and father, supposedly ever since Kazimir's birth, co-existed at best. However, as Kazimir grew older, he acknowledged his mother's love for Theodore, and Theodore's selfishness in taking advantage of that. Emmeline loved to love, and did so in spite of her shattered soul. Theodore loved to be loved, despite having none to give back. Objectively, the only thing Theodore did for Emmeline and Kazimir was provide them his manor to live within, and the gil to put food on the table.

With a certain sense of guilt does Kazimir think of his blood-mother. He wonders if Theodore loved her. A part of him hopes that he did, but he isn't certain that would make this tale more agreeable.Kazimir never got to ask. He still wonders if he ever would have, or if he would've even received a straight answer. It hardly mattered, he supposed. When Theodore died when Kazimir was 15, Kazimir felt as though he'd been carved out entirely.***

After Theodore's death, Kazimir and Emmeline were on their own, more or less. They had, fortunately, inherited Theodore's manor and a sum of wealth—or rather, Emmeline had. Still, it would only go so far, and Kazimir was determined to lessen Emmeline's suffering. She'd sacrificed much for him. It was only fair that he'd do the same.Thus, at age 19, shortly after the Calamity and after bittersweet goodbyes with his mother, Kazimir was bound for Thanalan—for Ul'dah. Of course, he knew of the prosperity people often sought there, and he was determined to be one of the ones to obtain steady wealth.Utilizing his education focused on the applied sciences within the Studium that he'd endured from age 13 to 18, he became the apprentice to a particular alchemist known for her healing salves and reagents. During this apprenticeship, he also became closely acquainted with various merchants and their wares around the city.

Times were hard, and slow. Kazimir barely made enough to support himself, let alone his mother.But, it was during that apprenticeship and after the discovery of a merchant's tome detailing combative poisons, that Kazimir began to dabble in the brewing of poisons, and their (quite profitable) sales. It had only taken a few sales. Slowly and yet far too quickly, he began to sink into the criminal underbelly of the city.Kazimir could never tell Emmeline the truth. Not when she has placed such faith in him, time and time again. How could he betray that?As the days go on like this, Kazimir, the Crow, finds himself hardened—more conniving, less compassionate. The people he's met along the way have shown him that the things worth having cannot be easy—and some must be stolen to be had.***fin

Kaz has a comfortable lounge and bookshop nestled within the streets of Ul'dah. Scholars and recreational readers alike visit the business often, as both can find something of interest within its walls. The prices aren't half bad, either.
